Information on joining SignedOriginals

The 'Virtual book signing'

SignedOriginals provides a service for writers, enabling them to sell their books to a wider and International audience. Making use of the Internet, SignedOriginals enables writers, self-publishers and those with limited distribution arrangements to reach more readers.

The 'carrot' is a signed book. Not a discounted book from a stock-pile of signed copies, but a signed book that has been personally dedicated to the customer - hence the term a 'virtual book signing'.

The signing is undertaken by following emailed instructions and the book is dispatched by post or courier as instructed and paid-for by the the customer. This method of purchase makes SignedOriginals perfect for gifts too. The Customer simply provides the dedication that they would like you to write in their book, together with the delivery address.

Signed or unsigned?

The book does not have to be signed... but it does make it special. Similarly, it does not have to be personally dedicated... but it does make it unique.

How it works

A personal webpage will be created for your book on SignedOriginals (one webpage per book) and this will be linked to other relevant books as the site develops. The webpage for your book will carry images, quotes and any extra information that will help to introduce your book and help the customer make a purchase decision.

If the customer want's to buy your book, they click the 'Order Book' button at the bottom of the page and complete details which are forwarded to you by email (SignedOriginals gets a copy of the order too). The order details include the customer's contact details, the name they want in the book, together with an optional dedication and special instructions.

SignedOriginals plays no part in the transaction and is NOT copied on your reply email to the customer. If you wish to accept the 'order', you simply contact the customer by email or phone to agree your preferred method of payment. Once you have received payment, you sign and dispatch the book and celebrate with a coffee!

How much it costs?

Each webpage is created by hand to be effective on Internet searches (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc). This takes time and effort so a set-up charge (currently discounted to £40 is requested (Euros, Dollars, etc, accepted with a 10 % contribution towards banking charges).

Commission is due on each sale, paid on an honesty basis (just tot-up the amount and pay regularly, e.g., 4 times a year... assuming success!). The margins on books varies widely so discretion is accepted, but as a guide, 40% commission is appreciated.

What do I need to supply?

Photos: A cover image of the book, plus some images from within the book if applicable. A photo of you is also a good idea - to put more life into the 'virtual book signing' - and any other images that you feel are helpful to the customer - pictures always make a webpage much more enticing.
Photos should ideally be sent by email, but CD-ROM or 6 x 4 prints can also be accepted. Photos should be compressed if possible to a file size of around 50kb each, for faster emailing.
Text: Email some text that helps describe the book - this could be from the foreword, back cover or new text. Some quotes from the book are also helpful.
If you want to donate a (signed) copy of the book, better still! It makes the webmaster job a little more interesting and I might be able to create a better webpage :-)

OK - I want to go-ahead
