Terror from Beyond Middle England by Sarah Crabtree

"She caught a random bus at the bus station as far as the terminus and therefore had to descend and walk. She had no idea where she was heading. The party music and the lights drew her like a bared limb draws a crocodile. This was how the saga began."

A little bit of sci-fi:

mushroom "It's worth just giving the ants a mention here. After all, they gave the friendly inhabitants of Staffordshire a good old run for their money: back and forth for cans of Kybosh. Since the last ant has swarmed, American scientists have discovered that its not-so-humble ant-cestor invented agriculture about fifty million years ago. They actually grew mushrooms, fertilising them with manure. They even weeded by digging them out or destroying them with herbicides formulated by their own tiny bodies. Alan was right to give them so much respect."

A little bit of humour:

Terror from Beyond Middle England by Sarah Crabtree "It is at this juncture in the saga that we should summarise the situation Zara has got herself into. Had she stayed in Reading, she could have—as most single, dutiful daughters would have—been a companion to her mother instead of letting Prozac do her job. She and her mother could have travelled religiously to the South Coast for tea and scones and a tour of suitable retirement homes. Instead, our foolish heroine packed an unsuitable holdall, which she hadn't even sussed out how to convert into a rucksack, caught a train, and ended up in Lichfield.

She caught a random bus at the bus station as far as the terminus and therefore had to descend and walk. She had no idea where she was heading. The party music and the lights drew her like a bared limb draws a crocodile. This was how the saga began."

Terror from Beyond Middle England by Sarah Crabtree Just waiting to be served up with a hot coffee:

"Six cups of coffee later, Zara decided it was probably the caffeine that was making her so hyper. She ought to have something to eat. She wondered if other people got so worked up about parties."
